Heiskanen has not played since March 2 due to mononucleosis, missing the last 11 games. But he skated with the team during Saturday’s morning skate and was a full participant at practice on Monday in California, according toWhile Stars coach Rick Bowness has cautioned that a return on Tuesday was not guaranteed, Heiskanen’s ramped up activity and travel on the road suggest that his return is very close. Heiskanen first skated on his own March 21, and has slowly progressed.
Hakanpää has averaged 6:25 more of ice time per game since Heiskanen left the lineup, a massive boost for a player that has been previously entrusted with third-pairing minutes. He’s stepped into the pairing alongside Ryan Suter at even strength and continued to be one of the team’s most-used penalty-killers.“It’s been OK,” Hakanpää said of his boosted minutes with Heiskanen out. “Some good ones, some games probably could have been a little better.
“I guess the question is what he can’t bring?” Hakanpää said. “To be honest with you, he’s a phenomenal player. He’s going to be a big boost for us, for sure, help in all areas of the game. It’s going to be great to have him back.”
