Anderson Espinoza back with Padres on minor league deal
The Padres have signed the beleaguered right-hander to a minor league deal, less than two years after trading him to the Chicago Cubs for an outfield rental in Jake Marisnick.
That he made it to the majors at all is a major victory after the Padres’ former No. 1 prospect underwent back-to-back Tommy John surgeries, barring him from the mound for four years after the pandemic was factored into a trying comeback. But back-to-back surgeries barred Espinoza from climbing a mound again until 2021, when he had a 5.02 ERA in 28 2/3 innings at high Single-A Fort Wayne when the Padres traded their former top prospect to boost their outfield bench.With the Padres, Espinoza — who can still push his fastball up to 97 mph but is struggling with command — will help bolster organizational pitching depth that has been thinned by trades over the last few seasons.
Henry, 23, had been with the Padres organization since 2016, posting a 4.16 ERA over parts of six seasons.
