The Chargers pushed to get a long-term extension done because they’re confident about what’s to come for the 6-foot-4 receiver who does his best work in crunch time.
COSTA MESA — Mike Williams called his mom first after agreeing to a new three-year contract with the Chargers, but Francina Palmer was already in tears when the phone rang Tuesday.
It was probably better that Williams’ agent called first because Palmer needed some time to process the terms of the lucrative contract extension. It was evident that Williams, the dynamic Chargers wide receiver, got his laidback and playful personality from his mother. But she needed a serious moment with her son after the life-changing news. She responded: “Boy, I’m so proud of you. I love you and I love what you are doing. Continue to do what you do, put God first and we can do more.
The Chargers are well aware that Williams has never been named a Pro Bowler or an All-Pro. They don’t care that Williams hasn’t had 80 catches or more in a season, something the other members of the $20 million club – such as Arizona’s DeAndre Hopkins, Tennessee’s Julio Jones and Green Bay’s Davante Adams – do routinely.
Accolades weren’t an issue when the Chargers pushed to keep Williams, but for the sake of ranking, Williams might be the best wide receiver in the NFL when the game is on the line. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is fantastic in crunch time, but he’d quickly point the praise at Williams, who had a record five go-ahead touchdown catches in the fourth quarter or overtime last season.: “Just to be with a quarterback who’s a franchise quarterback and who’s able to get me the ball, that was huge.
Chargers general manager Tom Telesco and head coach Brandon Staley have admiration for the maximum effort Williams provides on game days and they were quick to praise his memorable “Sunday Night Football” performance in the regular-season finale loss against the Las Vegas Raiders. Williams makes sure to call his mom after every game to let her know everything was OK. He had the same mindset when he missed six games during his rookie season with the Chargers.
