Microsoft will invest $1 billion in OpenAI, the ambitious Silicon Valley research firm that has dedicated itself to developing a benevolent artificial general intelligence—an AI capable of thinking like humans. It’s a pivotal moment for the group, which was originally founded by Tesla CEOto guard against the potential existential threats posed by artificial superintelligence.
It’s a sizable bet for Microsoft, especially given the embryonic state of AGI. The technology is considered the “holy grail” for AI researchers—an epochal leap forward that could permanently rewire human civilization. “AI is one of the most transformative technologies of our time and has the potential to help solve many of our world’s most pressing challenges,” Microsoft CEOsaid in a statement Monday.
