JUST IN: A judge in Phoenix has dismissed the case against Michael Turney, an Arizona man accused of murdering his teenage stepdaughter.
Alissa was a 17-year-old student at Paradise Valley High School when she disappeared in 2001. She was first reported as a runaway by her stepdad, telling police she left a note and was going to California, however, new information in Alissa's disappearance led to Micheal's arrest.A judge has dismissed the case against Michael Turney, citing a lack of evidence. The judge also ordered that Turney be released.Michael Turney is accused of killing his teenage stepdaughter, Alissa.
Prosecutors say Michael Turney told police he picked up his stepdaughter, Alissa, early from Paradise Valley High School on May 17, 2001. Later the day, he called police to report she had run away, and he was the one who notified family and friends that Alissa was missing. The incidents happened in the weeks leading up to Alissa's disappearance. Prosecutors say they don't have any witnesses that can prove Alissa was being sexually abused by her stepfather.
In 2008, phoenix police became suspicious and began actively investigating Alissa’s case. Sarah told the jury about a conversation she had with her father. In 2008, police began to suspect foul play in alissa’s disappearance, and searched the Turney’s former home.
