Hasan Ikhrata contends his four-decade, $160 billion plan was plagued by misperceptions but still should guide the region into the future
Hasan Ikhrata believes San Diego’s transportation future will still largely follow the ambitious, long-range plan he unveiled three years ago.
Ikhrata makes no apologies for insisting on a plan he said will fix the flaws in San Diego’s transportation system, make it more convenient to use and vastly expand it — for automobile drivers and transit riders alike.“It’s not frequent, not safe, they don’t go where people want to go,” he said. Ironically, it was Ikhrata who brought consensus to the SANDAG board in a backhanded way. He strongly pushed for a road-use fee on drivers to raise money for transportation projects and convince more people to take transit, which is supposed to help the battle against climate change
Ikhrata said he didn’t want to come to San Diego just to “push paper and collect my high salary,” which stands at $414,149 annually.
