Starting pitcher delivers on promise, pitches cleaner game as Padres blank Giants in San Francisco
The Padres supported Michael King with early runs again. This time, he responded by picking them up, too. Jurickson Profar’s grand slam gave the Padres a lead before King took the mound Saturday night, and the right-hander went about throwing seven scoreless innings for the first time in his career in the Padres’ 4-0 victory over the Giants. No, there was no no scoring after the top of the first inning.
Unlike in that game, King’s first start for the Padres, he did not walk seven batters in four innings. In fact, he walked six fewer than that in three more innings than that. King had said he believed the Giants would see the pitcher he really was in his second start, and that is what he showed them. With a deft mix of four pitches — plus a token slider here and there — King was highly efficient, as he stayed ahead of batters most of the night.
