The Pilot Point Republican gets an influential assignment to close out his remaining months in office.

The committee serves as a gatekeeper for most major legislation, setting the terms for amendments and debate on bills as they move toward a floor vote.Burgess, R-Pilot Point, highlighted the committee’s lack of constraints on speaking time that are typically imposed by other committees. Any House member is welcome to show up and speak on bills when they come up for discussion.

The committee’s role has evolved over time, however, and it has come under recent pressure as Republicans’ razor-thin margins make it difficult to forge internal consensus.Some of the most conservative members of the House GOP conference have expressed frustration with party leaders by torpedoing committee-approved rules for floor debate, preventing the underlying legislation from being considered.
