Once a media darling, celebrity attorney Michael Avenatti faces prison time if convicted.
Wednesday for defrauding former client Stormy Daniels and attempting to extort sportswear company Nike, cementing the swift and stunning downfall of a once-lauded liberal hero who took on President Donald Trump.
A federal grand jury in Manhattan indicted Avenatti for extortion, alleging he told Nike lawyers he would reveal embarrassing information about the company ahead of its earnings call if he wasn’t paid more than $20 million personally. He was also indicted for defrauding former client Stormy Daniels. Authorities say Avenatti diverted $300,000 Daniels was supposed to get for a book deal and used the funds for personal and business expenses. Only half the money was paid back.He faces a maximum of nearly 80 years of prison time if convicted.“I will be fully exonerated once the relevant emails, contracts, text messages, and documents are presented. . . . No monies relating to Ms. Daniels were ever misappropriated or mishandled.
