The glassy, elegant, 11-story inpatient tower scheduled to open Nov. 5 features easily navigable public spaces flooded with daylight and filled with art, plus state-of-the-art patient rooms and flexible amenities and layouts.
With those words, he sketched an appealing vision of a big city medical center as something beautiful, welcoming, and life-enhancing - not alienating, scary, and fortress-like.
In addition to the Glick Center and other new health facilities, MetroHealth plans to create a 12-acre park between Scranton Road and West 25th Street, now a tattered commercial corridor, as the new front yard of its campus.MetroHealth will make way for the park by demolishing its 1992 Outpatient Pavilion along West 25th Street and replacing it by 2024 with the new, $140 million Apex Center, now under construction along Scranton Road directly south of the Glick Center.
MetroHealth’s housing initiatives include the recently completed Via Sana, which means “healthy way’' in Spanish. It’s a $15 million, 72-unit apartment complex on the north side of MetroHealth Drive east of West 25th Street. It shows that the county’s public health system is using all the tools of healthcare architecture, community development, city planning, and urban design to redefine its once standoffish relationship with surrounding neighborhoods.
The $1 billion transformation planned for the MetroHealth system's main campus on West 25th Street in Cleveland includes the removal of the twin circular towers that have served as an iconic if less than beloved, presence since 1972.That spirit was especially evident in MetroHealth’s Towers Building, an 11-story pair of Brutalist-style inpatient high-rises built in 1972 off MetroHealth Drive with rough concrete facades and narrow, vertical slit windows.
The MetroHealth system's 240,000-square-foot Outpatient Plaza, completed in 1992 on its main campus at West 25th Street in Cleveland, features four clinic buildings atop a partially underground garage. MetroHealth will remove the structure as part of its ongoing campus transformation. Both buildings are on the way out. The Towers Building will come down in early 2024, and the removal of the Outpatient Pavilion will follow that year.
Inside, the hospital conveys a soothing mood of compassion through abundant daylight, clear sightlines designed to reduce anxiety about how to find one’s way around, and curving walls surfaced with warm-looking panels of wood. MetroHealth is considering training vines up the side of the garage, something it absolutely should do in order to soften the structure’s hard, overbearing appearance.
After the Apex Center is finished, visitors will be directed to enter Apex first, and then find their way to the entrance of Glick by walking along the glassy corridor next to the main driveway fronting the two new buildings.
