The long-range plan for big buses and new light rail lines in Houston is taking shape, but like waiting for a Metro bus, it will be a wait and a lot of uncertainty.
Drivers travel along Lockwood Drive at Navigation Boulevard on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, in Houston. Metropolitan Transit Authority's planned University Line, which includes a portion of Lockwood Drive, will be among the largest bus rapid transit routes in the nation, connecting numerous neighborhoods and transit centers. Skeptics, however, wonder if the $1.5 billion-plus project will ever attract riders to justify the huge expense, as opposed to simply better bus service.
Now, many are demanding that connected, convenient network Metro promised. Marcia Tibbets, 73, downsized from a West University Place home to a Greenway Plaza condo. Tibbets said friends that live near Hermann Park rave about the convenience of catching the Red Line light rail for doctor appointments in the Texas Medical Center.“Absolutely I’ll ride it,” she said during a July 13 Metro meeting. “There might come a day I can’t drive anymore.
Metro officials stressed this round of meetings is aimed at gauging reaction to the plan, and changes are likely if other options are preferred. “All the growth is happening on Homestead,” said Huey German-Wilson, president of Superneighborhood 48, which represents civic clubs in the area. “It is something we need to plan for, and this, they say, is a 30-year plan.”Fed up with stalled trains, East End drivers are tracking the delays themselves. Now, the city is too
