Meralco starved Barangay Ginebra with its relentless defense to outlast the crowd darling, 78-69, in Game 7 of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals on Friday at the FPJ Arena in San Jose, Batangas.
Meralco will face San Miguel Beer in the best-of-seven Finals beginning on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.The Bolts held the Gin Kings to just 11 points in the second quarter, a pivotal moment that enabled them to overhaul an early 11-point deficit and into a five-point halftime lead.
More importantly, the Bolts won their second straight series against the Gin Kings since losing their first six starting in the 2016 Governors' Cup Finals.Chris Banchero starred for the revved up Bolts side after finishing with a career-high 24 points, six rebounds and an assists. Chris Newsome added 20 and six dimes while rookie big man Brandon Bates stepped up big time to finish with six points, 13 rebounds and a career-best six blocked shots.
