City Heights resident Chi Cao loved to walk in the mornings. Since coming to the U.S. nearly a decade ago, the 66-year-old had made it a daily routine to exercise, wave at neighbors and collect cans that she would then use to send money back to her daughter in Vietnam.
Neither the defense attorney nor the prosecutor said whether Hamala has been diagnosed with a mental illness.Deputy District Attorney Amelia Diedrich said a doctor will evaluate Hamala to determine whether he is fit to face trial. A report on his competency is expected to be completed before his next hearing, scheduled for Aug. 3.

“We’re just very hurt right now to see one of our community members, a fellow grandma, just lost in such a tragic way,” Pham said. “I’m not related to her by blood, but our families are really close. We go to the same church. She was just a really, really sweet person.”
