A memorial service for former Governor James Florio was held today in Blackwood. Governor Florio died at the age of 85 last week. 🇺🇸 Thank you for your public service to New Jersey.
The event is open to the public and will be held at Camden County College in Blackwood. It’s the only public service for New Jersey’s 49th governor.
Florio, a Democrat, was governor from 1990 to 1994. The former amateur boxer and U.S. Navy officer served 15 years in Congress, representing parts of South Jersey, prior to being elected governor on his third try. He signed an assault weapons ban, as well as laws to overhaul auto insurance and school funding. He also ushered in a $2.8 billion tax increase that drew backlash across the state and helped lead him to be ousted from office after one term.
It’s the first funeral for a New Jersey governor since former Gov. Brendan Bryne died in 2018 at the age of 93.
