Whittier police officer killed in a weekend motorcycleOfficer Lanell Whitfield died from blunt force traumatic injuries in the 3900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Lynwood at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, according to coroner’s spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani. The coroner ruled the 25-year-old’s death as an accident.
The Whittier officer was on his way home to change clothes so he could attend a family gathering in Carson when the crash happened, his brother, Rodrick Whitfield Jr., 33, said. He described Lanell as a family man who was looking forward to seeing his relatives at an upcoming reunion in Texas. He is survived by his parents, a sister and two brothers.
“We were looking at pictures and there was one of him, 3-years-old, this bike with training wheels, and he’s holding a wrench,” Whitfield’s brother said. “Before we knew it, those training wheels were gone.” Whitfield was inspired by the example of his grandfather, a retired LAPD lieutenant, the Whittier officer’s father said. He was a former police explorer and had been a part of his local Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. program. So few were surprised when he chose a life of service in law enforcement.
Whitfield graduated from the University of La Verne before he joined the Whittier police department in October 2021 after two years as a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He worked patrol in Whittier.
