Jill Ellis, Wave co-founder, made it possible for San Diegans to get their first close look at standouts such as Rapinoe, Alex Morgan. More will follow through Mission Valley.

The Padres’ rise to the big leagues, for example, attuned locals ears to the sound of Hall of Fame wood slamming baseballs in Mission Valley, courtesy of Hank Aaron and Willie Mays.

As memorable as her pink hair was a lightning strike Rapinoe authored, just three minutes after entering in the second half. But when the World Cup arrived this summer, the challenges took her down a notch. Injuries and age had cut into her minutes played, a blow to both her own game and on-field chemistry that’s trickier to develop in an international event than during a domestic season.

Though two of her U.S. teammates didn’t put their penalty kicks within the frame, either, Rapinoe caught the most heat from critics after that defeat, to Sweden, bounced the Americans from the Cup earlier than ever.“Just a sick joke,” the Californian said of what she thought. “Are you kidding me, I’m gonna miss a penalty? … But that’s the way it goes.”Ideally, this World Cup would’ve served Rapinoe a sendoff like the one that 42-year-old Ted Williams, a San Diegan, enjoyed in 1960.

Rapinoe was no stoic in response to her version of home runs — at least in the moment. She struck dramatic poses. As with Williams, critics blasted her, though for much different reasons; Williams, because he didn’t cozy up to ornery sportswriters; Rapinoe, because, well, I don’t know entirely and exactly, and the reasons have varied, but where politics, sports and social media intersect — and Rapinoe’s comments on social justice, for example, drew ample attention — the vitriol flows.
