Russell’s “Joy” . Forming Annapurna in 2011, the 32-year-old software heiress opened her door to directors with a singular vision.
In 2014, Ellison became the first woman and the fourth person to receive two best picture Academy Award nominations in the same year — “Her” and “American Hustle.” But 2018 has proven a tough year, as financial difficulties forced Annapurna to jettison releases including a Roger Ailes biopic. Still, the year isn’t over, and she has potential Oscar contenders coming out, including “If Beale Street Could Talk.
