It was an exciting day at the Smithsonian National Zoo in D.C. on Saturday as the Western Lowland Gorilla family gained another member. It's official! After close to 25,000 votes, the Smithsonian National Zoo's baby western Iowland gorilla has a name.

About a week ago, the National Zoo put out a list of names in a poll asking for help in naming the baby gorilla born on Saturday, May 27.Zahra | Swahili for “beautiful flower”The zoo said that the baby girl was born at the Great Ape House to mom Calaya, age 20, and dad Baraka, age 31. It's the first time in five years, the zoo is celebrating the birth of a western lowland gorilla—a critically endangered species.

With all the excitement, the Great Ape House reopened Tuesday, May 30 while they took three days to provide Calaya a quiet space to bond with her infant. So, you can go pay baby Zahra a visit soon.
