While Maughan isn’t spilling what his next design will be, he plans to keep producing one per month for as long as he is able.
, he noticed that some runners were uploading routes that created silly, but not real art. “[Those are] funny and clever, but not original,” he said.
Wanting to create something different than the raunchy designs made by “running bros,” Maughan looked elsewhere for inspiration, starting with—the hand gesture—on a paper map, in a sort of tribute, since Leonard Nimoy had recently died,” said Maughan. “The way Market Street offsets the streets on its side made the ‘V’ shape a good starting point. The rest of the hand easily came into shape.
To make his finished art—which range from simpler shapes like hearts and four-leaf clovers to more intricate designs such as silhouettes of people or hands holding a pair of chopsticks—Maughan puts a good deal of planning in before actually going out and running.“I have to plan them very precisely in advance,” said Maughan. “I just dream up shapes of things—random, unexpected, timeless, widely recognizable, often kitschy or quirky things to ‘draw’ using the city streets as my canvas.
Once he has sketched out the drawing, Maughan will bring the map on his run, which is usually about 20 miles. Though he is still putting in the miles, his running performance takes a backseat to his artwork on these runs—making sure he covers the exact prescribed route is more important than time.
