Listeners will get to know List, from his days as a strange kid from Michigan who flinched at bad language and married the first woman who slept with him, to a priggish New Jersey neighbor and Sunday school teacher who learned to keep up appearances — and keep secrets — inside that old mansion high on a hill on Westfield’s ritzier north side.
The Lists, before they were victims of the patriarch’s calculated plot to do away with his old life and start a new one, were more than just some photos under a shocking newspaper headline. Close friends of the doomed family give voice to their lives: Alma, a nice neighbor and grandmother; Helen, the polar opposite of her husband; Patty, the teen who refused to live her life according to her father’s impossible standards; and the two boys, John and Frederick, described by one source as each other’s best friends.
The podcast goes deeper inside the confounding case, parsing fact from myth and analyzing what was going on inside the killer’s head when he left his family on sleeping bags in the ballroom in 1971, along with a confession note and vanished for nearly two decades.
