Ari Wegner, who served as the director of photography on Jane Campion's 'The Power of the Dog,' could make history this Sunday as the first woman to win the Oscar for best cinematography.
Between their initial conversation about the project and the first day of shooting, there was roughly a year of constant dialogue between the director and cinematographer, a notable departure from the typical four to eight weeks of production on the average film, whereby a cinematographer is brought in only after most major decisions have been made.
It also fell on Wegner to help recruit the rest of the film crew, ensuring that each and every member was someone who would not only share Campion’s goals for the film but would be in love with the story itself as well. And her duties hardly stopped there. Once on set, it’s often up to the cinematographer to create a synergy between the crew and the director, and Wegner’s experience on “The Power of the Dog” was no exception.
As the year’s most Oscar-nominated film, with a whopping 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography, Wegner’s work on “The Power of the Dog” indeed seems to have elicited the powerful response that she and Campion had hoped for. The western has been so well received, in fact, that it never once struck the cinematographer that her gender makes her an anomaly in cinematography.
