McKinney thinks its own commercial airport could be an alternative to DFW, Love Field

will be asked to approve a loan to cover the costs of runway upgrades, a terminal and other improvements that would get it up to the level of a commercial airport.

“If this is all for an Allegiant or another low-cost carrier, we aren’t interested,” Carley said. “We are going after major carriers that can and are willing to do several flights a day.” The Texas Department of Transportation gave McKinney National a $15 million grant in 2019 to add 1,500 feet to its runway, bringing the length up to 8,500 feet.

Groups have approached McKinney National in the past about developing a terminal and attracting a national airline. Pegasus Associates, led by former DFW Airport board member Joe Dealey, pitched a plan to the city to turn over operations to the private group, which would in turn build a commercial terminal.
