Mayor Richard LaBarbiera's son, Vincent, was one of 10 candidates approved for hiring by the council’s police committee. But when it came time to give LaBarbiera the job, three council members refused.

The son of the mayor of Paramus has settled a lawsuit against the borough for $250,000 after three council members held up his hiring for nearly 10 months.

A legal battled ensued, in which the mayor’s son filed a civil rights lawsuit against the council, followed by an action to compel the borough to abide by its own ordinance that prevents them from considering family or political affiliation during the hiring process.in late 2020, claiming that the mayor broke local ethics laws by failing to recuse himself from a vote to hire his own son.

On Dec. 4, 2021, a judge sided with Vincent LaBarbiera and said the council appeared to have violated a state law by refusing to hire him. “We said, ‘Just hire him. We’re not looking for any money. Just hire him.’ Instead, they refused, even after the court told them in essence you have no basis for what you’re doing,” Priore said.
