Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula will lead the Chrism Mass at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, Manila at 7 a.m. The Chrism Mass is a manifestation of the unity of the priests with their bishop. Bishops also traditionally bless on Maundy Thursday the three oils which will be used in the administration of the sacraments of the diocese for the year – the oil of catechumens to be used for the administration of the sacrament of baptism, the oil of infirm for the sacrament of the anointing of the sick, and the holy chrism for the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and holy orders.
His Eminence will also preside over the Mass Commemorating the Last Supper at the Manila Cathedral at 5 p.m. He will also wash the feet of twelve persons who will be part of the May 9 election this year.The cardinal will wash the feet of three first-time voters, a member of the Electoral Board, officials of the Commission on Elections , members of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting and a member of the press.
The Washing of the Feet is part of the Liturgy of the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. It is the commemoration of the Last Supper of Jesus before his passion. During that time, he also washed the feet of his disciples. “This significant tradition of the Catholic Church reminds the faithful that as disciples of Christ we are also called to serve others in the spirit of humility,” Church leaders said.
