Court heard Ivan Joseph Campeau slashed at Morin with a knife while chasing him into a parking lot, where he stabbed him 10 times.

“You have left me with the burden of having to mend the hearts of so many people, not just my own,” Morin’s mother, Nancy, told Campeau, reading from her victim impact statement. Morin, a 36-year-old father of three, was described by many in court as a “teddy bear” and “gentle giant” who called his grandmother every month and kissed people on the tops of their heads, telling them he loved them.Campeau had been consuming alcohol in the back of his friend’s car for hours before encountering Morin, who rode up beside their car on his bike, Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Addabor said when presenting the facts during Campeau’s sentencing hearing.
Justice Richard Danyliuk imposed the sentence — which falls at the higher general sentencing range for manslaughter — and delayed parole eligibility until Campeau has served half of his sentence. Offenders are usually eligible for parole after serving one-third of their sentence.Article content
