Long Island is seeing a massive spike in catalytic converter thefts, with officials saying Nassau County has seen a nearly 250% increase so far this year.
According to officials, there were 289 catalytic converters stolen in Suffolk County last year compared to 819 from January to late August of this year.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is budgeting for 36 sworn officers to help combat the problem and blames bail reform laws for an increase in crime."People are committing crime, after crime, after crime because there are no consequences," Blakeman said.
