ATLANTA — Marcus Mariota threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another score against the NFL's top-ranked defense, leading the Atlanta Falcons to a 28-14 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
“It comes down to just being able to have your opportunity,” said Mariota, who was benched on this very week three years ago by the Tennessee Titans and barely played until taking over for Matt Ryan in Atlanta. “I will be forever grateful to this organization for allowing me to have that chance.” Veteran tight end MyCole Pruitt, who was elevated from the practice squad for the game, collected the other scoring pass from Mariota, a 2-yarder to cap an 11-play, 74-yard drive on Atlanta's opening possession.
Atlanta's defense wasn't too shabby, either. The Falcons made things tough on Garoppolo, limited San Francisco to 50 yards rushing and even scored a touchdown of their own. San Francisco tied it with touchdowns on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter, both of them on TD throws to Brandon Aiyuk.
“I thought we had a lot of opportunities, we just didn’t take advantage of them,” Garoppolo said."Self-inflicted wounds, really.”With Cordarrelle Patterson on injured reserve, the Falcons are still producing in the ground game with a committee approach.
