PRESIDENT Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.
wants a 'well-trained' military to deal with the country's external threats that are becoming 'more complicated and more difficult' amid mounting tensions in the West Philippine Sea between Manila and Beijing.In his talk to the troops before the 9th Infantry Division at Camp Elias Angeles in Pili, Camarines Sur on Thursday, the President said the Armed Forces of the Philippines must prioritize its mission of safeguarding the country's maritime territory.
The Philippines and China are locked in a dispute over the South China Sea, where Beijing claims about 80 percent of the strategic water based on what it calls 'historic rights'.In January, Marcos flew to Beijing to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and urged him to establish direct communication lines with Manila to avoid 'miscalculations and miscommunications' in the disputed waters.
