PRESIDENT Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. expressed optimism on Thursday, December 19, 2024, about the growing partnership between the Philippines and Japan , focusing on defense, security, and economic cooperation .During a courtesy call of Japan ’s National Security Adviser Akiba Takeo at the Malacañang Palace, Marcos highlighted the strong and expanding ties between the two nations.
'I’m very optimistic of the continuing strengthening of our partnership,' Marcos said, noting their collaboration in defense and economic areas.The President emphasized the importance of their defense cooperation, especially in sharing resources, enhancing interoperability, and conducting joint exercises in the South China Sea. He also celebrated the recent ratification of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) by the Philippine Senate on December 16. The RAA between the Philippines and Japan, signed on July 8, 2024, is a defense pact aimed at strengthening the military cooperation between the two countries. This agreement, similar to the Visiting Forces Agreement between the Philippines and the United States, allows Filipino forces to enter Japan for joint combat training and enhances the defense relationship. Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru of Japan, through National Security Adviser Akiba, expressed joy over the significant progress in bilateral relations, referencing key meetings between the two countries and the approval of the RAA.
