No doubt these directions face challenges. The West and Japan are keen to be strongly involved in Asian affairs to prevent what they call Chinese bullying.

EASIER said than done, of course. But President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s perspective on China and Asia, told to China Global Television Network or CGTN during his Beijing visit, may just show the way to a so-called golden age of harmony and cooperation not just between China and the Philippines, but between the Asian superpower and the Asian super-region of Southeast Asia.

Both these approaches to regional security and peace — Asian harmony and Western-style balance of power — are now under evaluation. And not just through the Philippines' top-level panel led by new National Security Adviser Eduardo Año and instructed by President Marcos in November to review the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty with Washington, along with its ancillary accords, the Visiting Forces Agreement, effective since 1999, and EDCA.
