I was bullied and insulted and words were said with hatred—way before I ever had a sexual experience. I knew I was attracted to other boys; I didn’t really have any vocabulary or way to talk about that. I just knew that something in me felt, you know, aroused, or interested in guys as opposed to girls. I had no fear of or problem with the idea of homosexuality; I had a problem and a fear of homophobia. It wasn’t that I felt there was something wrong with me, or that I was broken.
