While she broke the time mark, she was first denied the record based on outdated requirements for a nurse’s uniform—a dress.
May told Anderson upon receiving the award that, “Part of what you did was leave a legacy that the nursing uniform perception has to change, and it’s something that really connected with me. Thank you for your nursing leadership and for what you did for our profession,” according toAnderson is thankful for the award, but believes the credit goes to the countless nurses who backed her in a show of social media support.
“I’m really proud to have received the award, but really I’d say it’s a testament to everyone who got behind the campaign, which I think lead to GWR changing their position,” Anderson toldAnderson said that she hopes her efforts have given the nursing profession a bit of positive PR. In the meantime, Anderson will continue to balance her work as a nurse in the acute assessments unit—similar to the emergency room environment in the U.S.—at Royal London Hospital with her running goals.
Recently, she won a bottle of whisky for being the first female finisher in a hill race in Scotland. As for her future plans, Anderson is keeping up her training and looking to run the San Sebastián marathon in November.Her love of all things outdoors came from growing up in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and her passion for running was sparked by local elementary school cross-country meets.
