The Chinese aircraft carrier CNS Liaoning was heading toward the Philippines and the South China Sea.

A Chinese aircraft carrier on Tuesday sailed from the Western Pacific Ocean toward the Philippines while the United States was facing a 'carrier gap' in the contested region again. The Japanese Defense Ministry on Wednesday updated the movement of CNS Liaoning, the first operational aircraft carrier of China, in the waters between Okinotorishima, an atoll administered by Japan that is the southernmost part of the country, and the Philippines.

It was not immediately clear at this point why the Liaoning was heading toward the South China Sea from the Philippine Sea instead of returning to China on the usual northbound voyage. Newsweek has contacted the Chinese Defense Ministry for comment by email. One of the possibilities is the Chinese aircraft carrier was avoiding Typhoon Krathon, which made landfall in the southern part of Taiwan on Thursday.
