Since the entrance charge is waived on five dates, a Park Service insider has tips on getting the most out of your trip in specific regions of the country.

Visiting one of country’s 62 official national parks is one of the most quintessentially American travel experiences one can have. Most of the year, you’ll have to pay an entrance fee to visit them, but on a few special dates, those same natural splendors are open to the public free of charge.

“It’s spectacular with incredible geologic wonders,” she says. “It’s a nice alternative if you want to find something a little bit more off the beaten path.”A volunteer helps keep a local park clean.
