The report shows the impact of New Jersey’s notoriously high property taxes and cost of living have on older residents.

The survey found 41% of voters in that age group have thought of moving, with 83% of them saying they are actually likely to go.

The poll found 42% of New Jersey homeowners and 36% of renters who are 50 or older considered leaving the state in the last year. Most — 75% — cite lower property taxes as the top reason to move, followed by 73% who say cost of living, 44% who say better weather, 41% who say better-run government, 22% who say they seek a safer community, 18% who say they want to live closer to family, and 11% who say health care.

The AARP survey found 78% of New Jersey voters who are 50 and older group saying property tax relief should be the top priority for leaders in Trenton this legislative session. The AARP poll also shows nearly 4 in 10 in this age group say taxes are difficult to pay each month. Plus, 28% of homeowners in that age group say their mortgage payment is 40% or more of their monthly income before taxes and 43% of renters in that age group say their rent payment is 40% or more of their monthly income before taxes.
