Machado homers twice, as Padres close out first half with victory over Mets
Manny Machado drove in five runs with a pair of homers in the Padres’ 6-2 victory over the Mets on Sunday to emphatically finish a first half that didn’t quite go the way he or the Padres expected.
To get to where they are was about as good as they could have hoped after going 1-5 on the road trip that preceded this homestand, dropping to a season-worst eight games below .500. Just before Scherzer’s day ended — after five innings and 100 pitches — Machado followed a Tatis single with a home run the other way and over the wall in right field.Musgrove took nine pitches to complete the first inning without throwing a ball, a lineout by No.2 batter Tommy Pham being all that kept Musgrove from an immaculate inning.
