A man who was stranded in a slot canyon overnight in Washington County was rescued Monday morning.
ST. GEORGE — A man was rescued Monday after he was stranded in a slot canyon overnight in Washington County.
The 41-year-old was riding a motorcycle in Warner Valley Sunday afternoon. When he didn't return by the time he was expected, a search and rescue crew began searching for him with help from a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. The crew searched for the man until about 3:30 a.m., then suspended the search until morning. The sheriff's office said crew members set out again hours later and at 8:30 a.m. Monday, they found the man at the bottom of a slot canyon where he had been stranded for about 15 to 20 hours.
The man had fallen around 20 feet into the canyon, and was hoisted out of it by the helicopter. He was transported to the St. George Regional Hospital in serious condition, but details about his injuries were not released. The man was later identified as Sgt. Brad Coleman, of Washington City Police Department. His motorcycle was recovered and returned to his family.
