A man in his 30s fatally shot himself while officers tried to arrest him for a suspected car theft in Waukegan Wednesday afternoon.

When officers arrived on scene a subject fled on foot. Officers attempted to arrest the man when he took out a firearm and shot himself. The Lake County Illinois Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity once proper family notifications have been made. The officer, a 6-year veteran of the Waukegan Police Department, has been placed on administrative leave.
