James Stephens, 50, was fishing at Dixon Quarry, which is located southeast of Columbus near Interstate 270, when his dog jumped into the water.
“There’s like a big drop-off,” said Rick Estis, who also was fishing at the quarry. “He was yelling, ‘I can’t swim.’”
Officials with the Columbus Fire Department tell WBNS that Stephens was in the water for about 30 minutes. A dive team was called to the scene and was able to locate Stephens in about five minutes, reports say. Stephens was taken to a hospital in critical condition but later died. The fire department said the dog was OK, WBNS reports.
