The fire broke out Jan. 15 while the store was closed and it destroyed the location's inventory.

Police and firefighters responded to the location, at 475 Hurffville-Cross Keys Road in Washington Township, shortly after 4 a.m. on Jan. 15.

The township fire department doused the flames at the store and donation center, but the building and its contents suffered extensive damage. Following an investigation, the fire was determined to be arson, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, and authorities ultimately arrested Patrick Fanning, 56, of Washington Township.

He was charged with arson and aggravated assault, because a volunteer firefighter suffered a non-life threatening injury battling the blaze, officials said.Because of smoke damage, all of the store’s inventory had to be discarded and the store remains closed until further notice, officials with Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia announced last week.

Goodwill opened a donation trailer at the store site this week to resume collections and rebuild its inventory. Donations will be accepted Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.The store’s 30 employees have been reassigned to nearby Goodwill locations. Our journalism needs your support.
