A man was arrested after police say he ran over and severely injured two people, including an 8-year-old child, on a motorized scooter in the parking lot of a n
ortheast Austin Mexican grocery store.
It happened on March 24 at around 9:02 p.m. at the La Hacienda Market located at 1400 Coronado Hills Drive. Police responded to reports that a blue pickup truck struck a pedestrian and fled the scene. According to the arrest affidavit, the child and adult were both riding on a motorized wheelchair on a sidewalk when 46-year-old Jose Lorenzo-Martinez hit them as he was leaving the parking lot, knocking the scooter over and then ran over both victims and continued heading east on Coronado Hills Drive without stopping to render aide.The 8-year-old suffered a severely broken ankle, which doctors say could take months to recover from and could have long-lasting physical effects on her leg.
When approached by Texas DPS and an Austin police officer, José admitted to being involved in the collision and stated he stopped in a parking lot a mile down Coronado because he knew he did wrong and remained there before being approached by a state trooper who identified his vehicle. Lorenzo-Martinez was booked into the Travis County Jail and charged with accident involving serious bodily injury.
