Crews from six counties reportedly are battling a blaze east of Elk Country Visitor Center near Benezette.

Crews from at least 19 fire companies in six counties on Wednesday night are battling what’s described as a “major forest fire” in an area a couple of miles east of the Elk Country Visitor Center near Benezette, the heart of the Pennsylvania Elk Range.
Reports by emergency dispatchers indicate that one person was injured on the scene of the fire, which was reported at about 3 p.m. near Winslow Hill Road and Treasure Hill Lane, and was taken to Penn Highlands DuBois.All fire crews from Elk County are battling the blaze, with crews from Cameron, Clearfield, Clinton, Jefferson and McKean counties.
The fire is burning in the central part of the Pennsylvania Elk Range, which is home to an estimated 1,400 elk. According to the Keystone Elk County Alliance, elk once lived throughout Pennsylvania, but rapid settlement and exploitation by early immigrants diminished the herds. By 1867 there were no elk in Pennsylvania.Today’s herd of nearly a thousand elk developed from 177 elk that were trapped in the western U.S. and transferred to northern areas of Pennsylvania from 1913-26.
