This piece of Marvel fan art imagines an alternate MCU lineup featuring pre-Iron Man movie superheroes 😲👏 Think Tobey Maguire's SpiderMan or Hugh Jackman's Wolverine would win that fight? 🤔
A piece of Marvel fan art brings together Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, Fox’s X-Men, and several other pre-Iron Man Marvel properties to form a proto-MCU. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has arguably been the defining Blockbuster achievement of the 21st century; spanning 27 films grossing over $25 billion, the series has been a huge hit, financially and critically, the world over.
However, the foundations that the MCU was built on can’t go without credit, as there were several films that came before the seminal Iron Man that kickstarted general audiences' appetite for Marvel projects. Blade, X-Men and Spider-Man are generally credited for igniting the modern comic book movie boom that continues to this day, with each film being financially successful while delivering spectacular action and genuine drama that seemingly elevated the sub-genre.
The piece will certainly be pleasing to a lot of fans who have either followed these films since their release or who have discovered them after the fact, due to their enjoyment of the MCU. Indeed, before Marvel Studios took the bold step of creating a cinematic universe, a lot of fans had preferred to imagine that these versions of the characters may well inhabit the same world anyway.
Maguire has already returned to the big screen as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and while fans were ecstatic to see him back in the role, some were slightly disappointed by the lack of detail as to what the character had been doing since Spider-Man 3. However, interviews have since confirmed that the character’s history was intentionally left vague, possibly in order to explore other story possibilities down the road.
