A somber week surrounding the 149th Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs ended with Mage winning the main race Saturday evening.
Mage was the unofficial winner at 2:01.57, with Two Phil’s and Angel of Empire coming in at second and third.
Angel of Empire and Tapit Trice entered the race with two of the best odds, respectively, among the horses competing, per an NBC graphic shown in the minutes leading up to the event. Even with the result, the day — and week — was defined by seven horses dying, including two on Saturday, ahead of the event. The day started with favorite Forte
due to a hoof bruise, taking the 9-to-2 odds and shattering them — along with the hope for Queens native Mike Repole to win his first Kentucky Derby trophy.. “We took X-rays, he’s fine. He probably just needs a couple more days.”
