Longtime Madison Academy boys’ basketball coach leaves for a job at Brentwood Academy in Tennessee. Andy Blackston led the Mustangs to five state championships in 11 trips to the AHSAA Final Four.

Andy Blackston, who led Madison Academy to five AHSAA boys’ basketball state championships, is leaving for the head coaching position at Tennessee’s Brentwood Academy, according to a news release from the school.
Blackson was head coach for the Mustangs for 16 years. The release also pointed out that Blackson’s son, Drew, will be playing basketball at Nashville’s Trevecca Nazarene University this fall. The Mustangs made 11 trips to the AHSAA Final Four under Blackston. The Mustangs won the title in 2007, 2008, 2013, 2015 and 2016. They finished second in 2009, 2010 and 2018. He coached the Alabama Sports Writers Association 2009 Mr. Basketball, Kerron Johnson, and Joshua Langford, who was named the Gatorade Alabama Boys Basketball Player of the Year as a freshman in 2013.
Madison Academy president Casey Farris praised Blackston’s influence on students at the Christian-based private school. “As important as Andy has been to our athletic program, even more important has been his role in campus ministry where he touched the lives of every student,” Farris said of Blackston’s work as the school’s Director of Spiritual Formation. “Andy has been a great role model and spiritual leader for our students. We wish him the best in his new endeavors.
