In Legends continuity, Kyle Katarn, a Jedi Knight who was once a Stormtrooper, teamed up with Imperial forces to fight a common enemy, despite their oppression of Jedi. It was an early sign that the franchise could move past Palpatine if it chose to.

The first Stormtrooper to become a Jedi in the Star Wars franchise later found a way for Luke Skywalker's New Jedi Order to work alongside the remnants of Palpatine's Empire. Kyle Katarn is one of the best-known characters from the Star Wars Expanded Universe before it was rebranded as Star Wars Legends.

A native of the Sullustan moon Sulon, Kyle Katarn ended his service in the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps and became a Rebel spy upon learning that the Galactic Empire razed his home and murdered his father for being a Rebel sympathizer. In Legends, a series of missions resulted in the Death Star plans being stolen, and one such mission was completed by Kyle Katarn and fellow Rebel spy Jan Ors.

In the Legends timeline, the Galactic Empire split into various warlord factions following Palpatine’s first death, and although there were several points where they reunified, such as the Dark Empire under the command of the reborn Palpatine, they truly solidified into a successor state in 12 ABY as the Imperial Remnant, led by Gilad Pellaeon.

Kyle Katarn, despite his Stormtrooper past, likely saw working with the Imperial Remnant as a necessary evil. The Galactic Empire has a horrific history of oppressing the galaxy under fascist rule and committing genocide against certain groups, such as the Jedi, so it couldn’t have been comfortable for Katarn or any Jedi to see the Imperial Remnant continue to use the Empire’s iconography and infamous Stormtroopers.

Even with his long history of slaying Stormtroopers upon becoming a Jedi Knight, Kyle Katarn was willing to work alongside his former foes during the Yuuzhan Vong War, creating an official alliance between Luke Skywalker's Jedi and the Empire. It's a story that reveals how Star Wars evolved and even moved on from the original source material in the Expanded Universe.
