Despite committing himself fully to the ways of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker actually learned his deadliest lightsaber technique from Darth Vader himself.

While Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader are effectively opposites in Star Wars lore, that doesn’t mean Luke wasn’t able to pick up a few tricks from his villainous father. In fact, as shown in the Legends sequel to Return of the Jedi, Star Wars shows that Luke actually learned his darkest lightsaber technique from Vader.

When Luke Skywalker fought Darth Vader onboard the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi, Vader used a technique against him that nearly took Luke out for good: the Saber Throw. The Saber Throw is a move where a Jedi or Sith literally throws their lightsaber in a boomerang fashion, all the while guiding its direction with the Force. Before Vader did this against his son, Luke had never seen this move before.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Luke Skywalker Actually Made Darth Vader’s Technique Even Deadlier In Star Wars: Heir to the Empire #2 by Mike Baron, Olivier Vatine, and Fred Blanchard , Luke is being chased by a gang of aliens known as the Noghri while on a political outreach mission with Han and Leia.

The Noghri are essentially the perfect killing machines, as their skin is tough, their claws are sharp, and their senses are heightened. One Noghri is enough to give even an entire team of skilled fighters a challenge , so a team of them is an assured death sentence. This is why Thrawn sent the Noghri, and this is also why the skill Darth Vader inadvertently passed on to his son while trying to kill him legitimately saved Luke’s life.

Not only did Luke use a move he learned from Darth Vader in battle, but he elevated it exponentially. Just by watching Vader fling his lightsaber at him, Luke was able to mimic the ability and use it successfully against seven assailants who were all essentially perfect killers.
