He played in the 2-1 Tigers’ first two games this season, a loss to Florida State and a win over Grambling State, after having started 13 of the 14 games in which he appeared last season. Next on the schedule for the 14th-ranked Tigers is Arkansas, the program with which Brooks spent his first three seasons.
“I mean this with all my heart: He’s a wonderful kid, and that didn’t change when he decided to go back to his home state of Louisiana,” Razorbacks Coach Sam PittmanBrooks’s father, Greg Brooks Sr., was a defensive back for Southern Miss from 2001 to 2003 who went on to become a Cincinnati Bengals draft pick and a two-year NFL player. Last year, Brooks’s 66 tackles were good for fifth on the LSU defense.
“We are grateful for the work and care of the medical staff helping Greg through these challenges and for the love and concern poured out by so many in the Louisiana, Arkansas and national sports communities,” his family said. “This means the world to us at this difficult time.” Asked Wednesday if he anticipated that Brooks might play again this season, Kelly replied, “It’s so hard for me to even know. There’s so many unanswered questions. I don’t even know that I could even begin to give you the medical pieces relative to the surgery to even give you an educated answer to that. I saw him in the hospital on Sunday.
“He’s still coming out of heavy sedation, so we weren’t able to have a lucid conversation, but I know before he went in, he was pretty clear about playing again this year,” continued the coach. “But that’s Greg Brooks.”
