A significant number of people who get COVID-19 continue to have some type of symptoms for months, according to a new large study. Between 6 and18 months after infection, 1 in 20 people hadn't fully recovered, and 2 in 5 had only improved somewhat.
). In this analysis, she and colleagues looked at 33,281 people with laboratory-confirmed infections and 62,957 never-infected people who answered questionnaires at 6, 12, and 18 months during the pandemic, as well as hospitalization and death records.
"It has always been the case that those who are sicker are more likely to have long-term sequelae," David Putrino, PhD, director of rehabilitation innovation for the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City, told the newspaper. At the same time, people with asymptomatic infections were less likely to have long-term issues, and asymptomatic infection wasn't linked to any adverse outcomes. Vaccination also appeared to offer some protection from long COVID and was linked to a lower risk of seven symptoms.
