The USS Cleveland is expected to be commissioned in 2025 during a ceremony in downtown Cleveland.
This rendering, as presented to City Council, shows what the "Lone Sailor" monument will look like at the northwest corner of Voinovich Park.CLEVELAND, Ohio – A monument dedicated to those who serve in the U.S. Navy is slated for downtown Cleveland’s lakefront – just in time watch over the planned commissioning of the USS Cleveland.
One of several such statues across the United States, the “Lone Sailor” pays tribute to the men and women of the U.S. Navy. It depicts a sailor, hands-in-pocket, staring out over the water. Planning for the statue started back in 2021, when a group of veterans, business leaders and others unveiled it at its temporary location at the Great Lakes Science Center.
City Council had to sign off because Voinovich Park is city-owned land, and a licensing agreement was required to allow the foundation to keep and maintain the statue at the proposed location for the next 25 years.
